I first met Sadie when she lived in a condo at 75 Graydon Hall Drive in North York. She was a good friend of my mother Betty Powell (d.2016). They had a lot of fun over many years throwing parties, playing cards, attending church bazaars and eating out at restaurants. Sadie was very elegant, friendly and diplomatic and I for one will never forget her.

Teta Sadie, Jackie, Sally, Teta Sadie was the most elegant of all of the Aunts, including my dear mother, Mary! As a child, I thought our Teta Sadie was either a model or a movie star. As I got older, I began to call her Jackie as I thought she was even more glamorous and looked like Jackie Kennedy. Then, she was nicknamed Sally when she got a job as a sales girl at Holt Renfrew. Holt Renfrew of all places! We had never heard of such a thing and immediately took the bus and street car from Pape and O’Connor to check it out. There she was, our Teta Sadie at Holts! After Holts she moved on to work at Bayview Village, Lewis Howard where once again she was the most elegant, glamorous sales girl ever! My mother took me there to get a fancy dress for a fancy occasion and Teta Sadie dolled me up! The memories of East York, 1342 Pape Avenue, Apt. D., Louis Marketeria, Ted’s Restaurant and 11 Wolverton are endless. The Louis’, Pavloffs and the Evans were stuck like glue. We ate together, played together, lived close, ran through the laneways as fast as we could to get to 11 Wolverton where the cousins could play in a real backyard that had a real pear tree. Teta Sadie and Baba Latsa always brought us into the sunroom for a treat. The special treat at birthday parties was a glass of chocolate milk and a cookie! When we had family parties, birthday parties and Name Days the adults sat at the dining room table and the kids sat at the kid’s table in the sunroom. As the years passed and all of the old guard had passed, Teta Sadie kept us together and close. It was because of her that our families have held tight kept our heritage, faith and love for each other. We are a team, a bond that cannot be broken. God has taken our dear, Teta Sadie, wife, mother, Baba, aunt to His Kingdom where she has been reunited with those who have entered prior to her. She is safe, happy, healthy and will live eternally. Teta Sadie will be missed but cherished for the values she helped instil into all of us who shared her life. Love you always and forever, more today than yesterday and even more tomorrow, Elenka
