Obituary

Robert George Van de Mark, Bob, or ‘Van’ to his many friends, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Princess Margaret Hospital. He was in his 69th year.
As he himself said, “I’ve had a pretty good run,” and that he did!
The most important thing to him in life was family. Predeceased by his mother, Phyllis McKay Van de Mark Walton, step-father John F. Walton and father Dr. Thorpe Van de Mark.
Bob was blessed with four beautiful children and two grandchildren, whom he adored and was extremely proud of. Kate Poole (Jody) and their children Beatrice and Parker, Jean Van de Mark, Bobby Van de Mark, Ben Van de Mark and wife, Lesley Van de Mark.
Although, five of six siblings lived afar, there were many memorable family times shared at his two favorite places in the world, Columbia Island in Muskoka and Windermere Island in the Bahamas. Bob will be dearly missed by Valerie Van de Mark Brown (Peter) and nephews JP, Scott and Will, Thorpe Van de Mark, Katherine Van de Mark (Diana), Elizabeth Van de Mark Gallagher (Joseph), niece Katherine and nephew Joseph, Donald Van de Mark and Scott Van de Mark.
Bob was immediately welcomed into Lesley’s family. Together they enjoyed dock time and Christmases in the Kawartha Lakes. Predeceased by his father-in law Orville Wright and brother-in law Jeff Wright. He will be dearly missed by Mother-in-law, Jane Wright, Brother-in law, Jim Wright (Christine), nephew Ryan, and nieces Rebecca, Claire and Emma, Brother-in-law Brad Wright (Krista) and nephews John and Oakley. As Brad commented, “the weeds at the cottage will now be overgrown, the Ceasars’ not as good, and we are not sure who will carve the Christmas Turkey this year.”
Bob graduated from Western University with a degree in economics. At 18, he started as a rookie at Wood Gundy and went on to become the Vice President of the Wood Gundy York Branch. He then moved on to work at Watt Carmichael Inc. and Foster & Associates.
Sadly, Bob will be missing his 50th year class reunion at Upper Canada College this fall. He always spoke so fondly of his years there, playing First Team Hockey and Football and was Lead Sergeant in the Colour Guard Battalion.
Van will be sorely missed at his annual Polar Bear Weekend where his name appears the most on the trophy for ‘longest in the water.’
Bob was a true gentleman and loved by so many. We will all miss his positive attitude, sense of humour, and engaging nature.
Many thanks to the doctors and palliative care team at PMH. Best in the world! So kind, thoughtful and caring.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Princess Margaret Cancer Research.
A Celebration Service of Bob’s life will begin at 2 p.m. for family and close friends at HERITAGE FUNERAL CENTRE 50 Overlea Blvd., 416-423-1000 on Thursday, May 23 with a reception gathering immediately following the service. I was very saddened to read of Bob's untimely death. Bob was our broker at Wood Gundy when I administered National Trust's Index Fund in the mid-1980s. He was always a pleasure to deal with. He was dedicated, and skilled at his job, certainly. But it was his wonderfully warm and positive manner, his true thoughtfulness and courtesy, that set him apart and made him so memorable. He was in fact a true gentlemen, and the world is the poorer for his departure: may he rest in peace. My sincere condolences to his family.

Dear Thorpe, Valerie, Kathy, Elizabeth, Donald, and Scott, Connie called me about Bob- I was shocked and very saddened.
I ran into him about two years ago on Yonge-he looks at me and grins-and says-"Hey Payton-how are ya?!". Now outside of a medical
appt. no one since UCC/SAC calls me by my last name-that is 45+yrs. ago. I knew that voice immediately...We talked-he was just as I remembered-fun, engaging, wanted to know if I'd seen Frazer-how was Connie-like 40 years + was last week!
It's no accident I drive by #1 St. Edmund's on the way home most nights-on Friday they had the most beautiful blue flowers-
and I thought Bob would approve-UCC Blue. The War Wagon, the Boathouse, Cooler golf- seemed normal then-now I understand how special those years, those places, and most importantly those people-with Bob leading the parade-were to making me who I am-they will always be a deep part of me-I don't think you could ever recapture that incredible fun-like a Beach Boys song everyday! (And he loved Karen Carpenter-so did I!)
He was your brother-but younger guys like me looked up to him too-I still did when I saw him-you were very lucky to have him leading your family-especially in those years when your Mom was single; to me it seemed he really stepped up and took charge.
Anyway, my thoughts are certainly with all of you-I'm having an operation on Tues. so I don't know if I can make the Memorial-
but I want you to know what an impact he had-and what a special guy he was- really ,that's the meaning of a life well lived.
Thankyou Bob for all you were to me, and all of us-you made that time-and you made our lives, so much better.
With Sincerest friendship and condolences, Russell Payton.

Bob/Van was the most fun guy on the lake way back when—full stop. The laughs, the chatter, the smile, the 24/7 energy—just a warm and wonderful human being who meant so much to our group during our (extended) formative years. God bless, and smooth sailing.

“Van” was my boss at Wood Gundy York Branch many years ago. And what a great boss he
was. He was fun and funny and always looked on the
bright side of life. He was gracious and generous and kind. I was so very sorry to see that
he had died.
My sincere condolences are extended to his wife and family at this time. RIP Bob
